COMMUNITY RELATIONS Because of the recent increased interest and enthusiasm in the Railroad, we have begun an Arkansas Missouri Railroad Fan Club, with members from many different states. We recently expanded our Passenger Train Depot to include a souvenir store, museum, and picnic area for our guests to enjoy. We have a television and VCR set up for customers to watch educational videos while they shop or wait for the Passenger Train to depart. There are several antique train items that have been donated for the museum so that guests can learn a little bit about the railroad while they wait to depart. Most of Arkansas Missouri Railroad's community involvement comes from helping non-profit organizations to achieve their short-term goals. In just the past four months, Arkansas Missouri Railroad has devoted its time to helping three major causes. The first organization that we helped was the Catholic Immigration Services (CIS). We offered a train ride to help the CIS raise money for their services. Arkansas Missouri Railroad volunteered to help out the Fayetteville Public Schools Vital Link Program. This program consisted of twenty, eighth grade students coming to the Railroad to shadow certain individuals for four working days. These students learned daily operations that occur within Arkansas Missouri Railroad. The students' jobs consisted of being the Dispatcher, Controller, Marketing Representative, Engineer, Conductor, Mechanic, Signal Controller, Safety and Investigation Unit member, or President. Arkansas Missouri Railroad did such a good job of participating in the Vital Link program that they were selected as one of four businesses to get mentioned in the local newspaper. Finally, on May 8, 1999, we began a fund-raiser for the Oklahoma Tornado victims. During this fund-raiser, we raised over $500.00 and a tractor-trailer full of donated items. These items were delivered to the victims on May 25, 1999. As you can see, we take our role in the community seriously. Not only do we encourage people to experience the nostalgia of our passenger train, but we also want everyone to know about safety around railroad areas. With the help of the surrounding cities, we hope to bring tourism into the area and keep the era of the passenger train alive!
