SAFETY & SECURITY
Arkansas Missouri Railroad not only emphasizes safety first, but has programs in place to attain their goal of a safer work environment. Many companies talk safety, but lack the initiative or capital to complete a competent safety and security program.

Arkansas Missouri Railroad have a vast library of safety tapes available to its employees and conducts weekly safety classes as well. Each employee is aware that not only are they responsible for their own safety but they are also responsible for the safety of those around them.

Arkansas Missouri Railroad is one of the few shortline railroads in the country to set up their own Special Investigative Unit (S.I.U.) utilizing the railroad police powers to operate. The S.I.U. team's primary focus is on safety procedures and they are responsible for investigating all accidents, injuries and grade crossing accidents.

S.I.U. officers have active program for arresting taggers vandalizing railcars in Arkansas Missouri Railroad yard. The S.I.U. team has installed both overt and covert cameras to discourage theft, fraud or vandalism.

Articles have been written to highlight Arkansas Missouri Railroad's awareness that there needs to be more safety measures put in place around railroad crossings in order to reduce accidents.

An article titled "Tickets for Correctly Stopping at Tracks Reward Motorists with Free Train Ride," describes the joint venture between a local police force and Arkansas Missouri Railroad to reduce crossing accidents.

The S.I.U. has helped produce a grade crossing collision video. The video was produced on the A&M Railroad and used a real collision with our Six-Axle Locomotive #70 and a Ford Van.

We used the Springdale High School Television Class to video the crash and the Shiloh Christian High School Drama Class as actors.

We also utilized the crash as a training exercise for the local Police, Fire, and EMT's. Northwest Medical Center used the exercise for their mass casualty drill as well.

The video is available for training purposes for $29.95. Discounts will be made for volume or teaching aids. We are planning a Haz-Mat Training Exercise in the Spring of 2002.

S.I.U. has stepped up security measures along the railroad in light of the recent terrorist attacks. No visitors will be permitted to roam to property as before to take pictures. We apologize for the inconvenience, but security and safety is priority.

We have instituted increased security along our tracks and right-of-ways. All persons found on our property illegally will be detained for questioning.

Arkansas Missouri Railroad is also active in closing rarely used or redundant crossings and have, in the past year, closed several public and private crossings as a further effort to improve crossing safety. The press has continually praised Arkansas Missouri Railroad for their efforts to help reduce railroad accidents.
