ARKANSAS MISSOURI RAILROAD COMMUNITY RELATIONS Fan Club membership continues to grow with interest and enthusiasm with members from different states and countries. The gift shop/museum has a lot of train artifacts and logo items for guests to enjoy and learn about the railroads and the Orphan Trains. Combine (Car 102) retired from the A&M Line to the St. Louis Transportation Museum at the end of 2001. Built in 1899, by the Boston and Maine Railroad in Concord, New Hampshire. The Combine has run on the A&M Line since the excursions began. Being over 102 years old, it has well served many railroads and will be missed by A&M and it's many passengers. The Boston Mountain Railroad Historical Society has joined ventures with A&M to restore the 1927 Baggage and Express car that is parked by the main office. Once restored, the car will be moved to the Passenger Depot and become an addition to the Museum and used as an educational site for Operation Life Savers, birthday parties, and other functions. The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad continues community involvement during the 2001 excursion season by helping non-profit organizations to achieve their short-term goals. A fundraiser for the Americn Cancer Society grossed $10,000.00 in November. This was their second year to run from Van Buren to Fayetteville. The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad has become an annual fundraising event for their organization. Pearl Harbor's 60th anniversary and other veterans were honored this year by A&M. The special train left Springdale at daybreak and began picking up WWII veterans, family members and other veterans for a day in Fort Smith. The train arrived at the new pavilion for lunch, which was then followed by several tours. The day ended with a word from the Fort Smith Mayor and a salute from the Color Guard. The excursion brought back a lot of memories for the men that served our country. We will be coordinating a Veteran's Day Train for 2002. As you can see, we take our role in the community seriously. Not only do we encourage people to experience the nostalgia of our passenger train, but we also want everyone to know about safety around railroad areas. With the help of the surrounding cities, we hope to bring tourism into the area and keep the era of the passenger train alive!
