ARKANSAS MISSOURI RAILROAD TRAINING We offer cross training to all interested employees, which has resulted in a very successful program. As a result, we now have twenty-one engineer/conductors, nine conductors (who are waiting their turn in the engineer program), and seven qualified dispatchers working out of seven different departments. Because of this, we always have enough qualified people on hand to handle whatever problems arise without interrupting customer service. We have recently entered into a venture with the Arkansas Economic Development Commission & Customized Training Incentives Program to provide training to individuals who may be interested in a railroad career. Each session lasted four hours a night for three weeks. Classes were given on Operating Rules, Safety, Diesel Mechanics, Air Brakes, Car Repair, Track Maintenance, and Signals. These classes were tailored to give people a basic understanding of what goes on at a working railroad. This program resulted in us finding a few good employees and another opportunity to promote public awareness. Our cross training approach has proven to have more than one advantage. With all of our qualified employees in so many different departments and staggered starting times for these departments, we can fill any opening that may come about. The cross training also gives employees a chance to broaden their horizons and, with alert supervision, we can guard against employee burn out and provide a safer and more efficient work place.
